+ 15th Night +

15 nights the Pasha Bulker had been stuck firmly to the sandy bottom of Nobbys Beach, Newcastle, NSW when I grabbed this capture. The big salvage operation went ahead readying for the opportunity presented by the next big tide. Many of the onlookers tended to be somewhat sceptical!! However, on the 2nd July at around 10:00 pm the large bulk carrier was released from its sandy prison and towed out to deep water. For three weeks it had been captive on this sandy beach and reef.

Great shot Phil! I don't think they will have any problems re-floating the Pasha, as long as the weather is reasonably calm on the 30th of this month! #4428643Phillip R. Connolly June 23, 2007
Thank you Donna, David, Murry, Susan, Dominick, Debra, Mike, Nadine, Kitty and John for taking the time to comment on my Image. John, the big problem with situations like this one is that the relatively flat hull of 225 metres length and 32.2 metres beam ship will be sucked into the sand. They will first have to get water moving under the hull before it will go anywhere. What methods they plan to use for this part of the operation will be interesting. I have seen a salvage report from the 22 June indicating that the operation may come to more than the $41M replacement cost which them would make it more viable to dismantle the ship in place. I hope the next big tide works for the operation! #4428798Alexis Yobbagy June 23, 2007
Fabulous shot Phillip!!! This is a fascinating turn of events with this vessel and you've really captured the wonder of it!!! #4429083Phillip R. Connolly June 23, 2007
Thank you Alexis...it's not often we get a situation like this one so close to home, so it is all very fascinating to us locals. Unfortunately you can't even go for a walk on the beach now as the whole area is closed off and patrolled by security guards 24hrs. We can only satisfy ourselves with watching the proceedings from behind the fencing.Phil #4429392
