I'm puzzled by the streak of color behind the one plane. What is it? #10847358Dale Hardin September 17, 2013
Very cool capture Mike. I agree it could use a bit of levels or curves adjustment.I'm guessing the streaks are the sun refracting off the exhaust. #10847369

Thanks Rita – here is a lighter version.
Jeff this is their smoke generator. They use red, white, and blue smoke. This shot shows it more clearly.
Thanks Dale – just added a bit of brightness.

That makes sense, Mike.Next year, I'm going to have to come up with an excuse for work to need me in Reno for this :o)
Nice work! #10847873

Super nice work, Mike, and a stunning point of view. I wonder if cropping or lightening the dark clouds on the top edge would eliminate the feeling of being hemmed in between the dark clouds and the mountains. #10848949

Anything with military type aircraft is good by me Mike. This is a civilian display team and I say 'military type' as these Czech built a/c are used as advanced fighter trainers by several nations.Elaine Hessler September 21, 2013
Nothing else to add that hasn't been addressed above-this is great. And I do like the smoke coming out the back-looks very cool! #10850417Beth Spencer September 21, 2013
These are amazingly clear and I really like them. So when you are tracking them do you worry more about the speed you are shooting than the fstop? #10850531Beth Spencer September 21, 2013
I meant to ask, what kind of exhibit are you doing and good luck! #10850532

The exhibition is not a big deal. A number of local photographers have been asked to do two photos each for exhibition at the Western Heritage Interpretive Center. They will be exhibited for the month of October but must be in and ready to hang by next Wednesday the 25 of September. Subject to be - Fall in the Sierras. I have them edited and printed and the frames ready. Just need to get them in the frames and delivered. I am using two from the June Lake shoot I did with Stephen a couple years ago and both have been posted in the past. I will see if I can get them on this tread as soon as I have time so you can see them again.
Peter I wish I had a flash that would do that. I like having clouds for a BG but it is much easier to shoot against a blue sky for these type shots as the clouds tend to cause back lighting problems.
Elaine the f stop is not very important as things are far enough away that DOF is no longer an issue. So yes shutter speed needs to be where you can prevent camera shake from causing a problem. The tracking usually takes care of subject motion pretty well. My 100 – 400 mm lens is stabilized and has the ability to set it so the stabilization only impacts the vertical movement of the lens allowing for tracking shots. This helps a lot.

Kalena – I was ANG but never got activated during my 6 years in. I know what you mean. One of the reasons I go to the races every year.
