OK Sam..since you uploaded this into the constructive critique I will present another option..one that I have followed with a red rose.I find red roses difficult because, for me, the red seems to obliterate detail.
So I have used the dodge tool for the petal edges...to brighten them...and the burn tool to heighten the shadows. I would also do a bit of sharpening.
In this instance expecially with a full frame image, I would be striving for more clarity.
The Orton makes for a bit of intentional blurring which, I feel, does not heighten the attractiveness of this rose. #3546571

Thanks for your critique, Melissa. I haven't found any of my own photos that I've been completely satisfied using the Orton technique on, yet I see so many in the forums that look great. Here's the original photo. #3546674Sam Britt November 04, 2006

Hello Sam ... I don't know what the Orton technique is, but I like the rich color and mysterious feel of this image. The title is perfect! :D #3563838Sam Britt November 11, 2006
Thank you, Colleen. I'm glad you liked it. I've tried the Orton technique on several of my images and I'm never really sure when if it looks quite right. That's why I uploaded this image to the Contructive Critique Forum. You can find instructions for the Orton Imagry at this link: http://www.naturephotographers.net/articles0106/dw0106-1.html#3575380

Samantha -- I think this is a gorgeous image but I understand why you have asked the question you did. The Orton method is new to me as well, and I really like it on most of my landscapes, but on some of my flowers it seems to have fallen short of my expectations. I think Melissa has a valid point with the loss of detail with the darker colored objects. I am anxious to go home and try the dodge/burn on a couple of my roses. #3699039Steve M. Harrington December 13, 2006
Hey Sam, I think this looks nice, but I'm inclined to agree with Melissa. From my fooling around with the Orton Technique I've found that it is most effective on images with lots of small detail, a rose garden rather than an individual rose.Steve #3699278

Hi Steve, I haven't found very many of my images that Orton tecnique looks good on, unless I do something else to enhance the image. I have a photo of the same rose unedited in my gallery "The Color Red" http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/big.php?photoID=2743034&catID=&style=&rowNumber=57&memberID=160422Paula Dwyer December 29, 2006
